      Description

      Ophthalmology never stands still. It continues to evolve as new technology, techniques, and knowledge are incorporated in the eye care of patients. Therefore, it is necessary to be aware of the Recent Advances in Ophthalmology-17 to keep oneself abreast with the newer developments. Childhood myopia is an extremely common ocular condition seen globally with its prevalence increasing at an alarming rate. Genetic and environmental factors play a key role in the development of myopia in children. Rohit Saxena et al. have described approaches involving prevention, early intervention, and management of childhood myopia. Bioengineered cornea aims at regenerating and developing a biomimetic cornea that eliminates the need for donor cornea. It is an effective alternative to deal with shortage of human donor corneal tissue. Further, it addresses the biocompatibility challenges seen after corneal transplantation. The regenerative approaches employed in corneal bioengineering are explained by Sangwan et al. Corneal diseases are the third leading cause of visual disability and blindness in the world after cataract and glaucoma. Pediatric keratoconus, a rapidly progressive ectatic condition of the cornea, may cause corneal blindness if not diagnosed and managed early. A detailed account of advances in diagnosis and treatment of this condition is given by Ramappa et al. Lamellar keratoplasty retains the healthy recipient cornea while selectively replacing the scarred tissue. Advancement in different techniques of lamellar keratoplasty is elaborately covered by Kodavoor et al. Moreover, the book also gives a lucid description of some of the interesting topics like medical management of glaucoma and noninfectious uveitis, application of polymerase chain reaction in the diagnosis of uveitis, and management of hard cataracts.
