A Case Oriented Approach Towards Biochemistry

NAMRATA CHHABRA
ISBN: 978939059579220232/e Reprint

Synopsis

The revised edition contains illustrations of three hundred clinical cases. Each case has been carefully designed and described with a logical coverage of the fundamental aspects of biochemistry and the clinical implications of the underlying biochemical deviations., The original format of the description of clinical cases has been maintained in the revised edition. In each case, illustrations of the basic defect, the underlying pathophysiology, and the clinically relevant details have been provided. Each case study ends-up in a ‘clinical note’ and a summary in the form of essential points, titled as “clinical pearls.”, The course contents have been spread out in twenty-nine chapters. Each chapter starts with a list of ‘learning objectives.’ The case descriptions relate to the learning objectives. Each case study has been assigned a ‘theme’ based on the contextual details, and three clinically relevant ‘icons’ for the depiction of theme, clinical note, and clinical pearls., Three new chapters have been added including the details of biochemical and molecular techniques, case-based multiple-choice questions, and quick revisions of significant biochemical deviations. Newborn screening due to its diagnostic and prognostic significance, and some topics of clinical concerns, such as heavy metal toxicity, tumor markers, mechanisms of enzyme action, and enzymes inhibition have also been included. Some redundant cases have been removed to reduce content load, and some have been updated to include the latest information and pictorial representations. Thirty-seven diagrams, tables, flowcharts, and nine new cases have been added to provide broad and conceptual coverage of the course contents.

      Key Features

      • 300 case studies. • Based on new CBME curriculum allowing horizontal, spiral, vertical and nested integration. • Full coverage of all chapters of biochemistry with complete clinical correlations. • Illustrations of clinical cases in sections, namely history, physical examination, laboratory work-up and questions related to the diagnosis of the case. This will help sharpen the clinical skills by simulating a clinical reaching at a diagnosis experience. • Each case study ends-up in a clinical note and a short summary in the form of important points, titled as Clinical Pearls. This will help the readers to quickly revise the contents. • Many alternative unsolved case studies (72) have been provided at the end of the book which would help the students to evaluate their problem-solving skills gained through the course of the book. • Detailed description of molecular and biochemical techniques, including electrophoresis, chromatography, western blotting, southern blotting, polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), colorimetry, and newborn screening. • Case-based multiple-choice questions for self-assessment (with answers). • Quick revisions (summary charts): Acid-base imbalance, disorders of amino acid metabolism, disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, regulatory mechanisms of carbohydrate metabolism, disorders of lipid metabolism, regulatory mechanisms of lipid metabolism, electrolyte imbalance, clinical implications of vitamin deficiencies, and clinically important hemoglobinopathies. • Nine new case studies including-clinical role of ribonucleotide reductase, tumor markers, enzyme action and inhibition, functions and significance of zinc and selenium, and heavy metal toxicity. • Pictures (37 new pictures), tables and flowcharts for meaningful explanations of content details.
